Rs 128 crore project to revive Aakkulam lake

The project will be implemented with the help of Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Directorate of Tourism has come up with a Rs 128 Cr worth project to rejuvenate Akkulam Lake, which is infested with water hyacinth and garbage piles. Tourism minister Kadakampally Surendran on Monday handed over the draft of the detailed project report of the project that aims at rejuvenating the Akkulam Lake using eco-friendly technologies to the executive chairperson of Akkulam Destination Management Council, Usha Titus. The project will be implemented with the help of Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).

The draft proposal of the project was prepared by the Translational Resear-ch and Professional Leadership Centre (TPLC) under Barton Hill Engineering College. The project aims at cleaning up the polluted Aakkulam Lake, by removing garbage and water hyacinth. The quality of water in the lake will be improved using recycling technology. The project also envisages the installation of an intelligent onsite water quality monitoring system, which will provide live information on the water quality.

A decentralised waste management system will be set up as part of the project for sustainable waste management at Akkulam.

The minister said that the project will be implemented with public participation. Other major components of the project include artificial island, Bamboo Bridge, green bridge, paved pathways, cycling track, garden, seating arrangements.
