Overcrowding, climate spread chicken pox virus in Hyderabad
HYDERABAD: Sporadic cases of chicken pox are being seen in the city, doctors said on Monday. Chicken pox is caused due to the virus Varicella zoster. Due to the rampant viral infections, this virus is also active in the air.
Dr M. Govardhan, a senior general physician, explained, “The chicken pox virus is very contagious cases are seen in places where people are crowded together like hostels, colleges and shared accommodation, where there are many people in one unit. Chicken pox is being seen throughout the year but in a sporadic manner and not in clusters.”
There has been a major increase in viral infections this year and doctors say that it is because of over-crowding, low temperatures and change in the environment.
Dr Anish Anand, general physician with Apollo Hospitals, said, “We are seeing a lot of viral infections in terms of cold, cough and respiratory infections. There are also cases of dengue and chikungunia which are being seen in large numbers. The changing climate, exposure to high levels of pollution, especially nitrogen and sulphur dioxide is reducing immunity levels in people making them susceptible to viral infections.”
