Madrasa plans to start a course in Sanskrit

The main purpose of the course is to explore the spiritual scripts of the ancient language.

Hyderabad: The Harmain Sharifain Arabic-English Islamic Model Institution is planning to introduce a course in Sanskrit.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Mohammed Jahangir said the institution is preparing to introduce tailor-made courses to teach Sanskrit in addition to Hindi and Persian in the next academic year.

It will be the first Islamic institution to offer a course in Sanskrit.

The main purpose of the course is to explore the spiritual scripts of the ancient language. Students of comparative studies will find it useful.

Prof. Jahangir said learning the Sanskrit language will allow students to explore the similarities in faith between the Vedas and other spiritual scripts of Hinduism and Islam.

“For that purpose, we are availing the services of language experts from the IEFL and Osmania University. We are designing the course in a manner that a learner can understand the basics and grammar of the language in a short period. The duration of the course will be 11 months,” he said.

Prof Jahangir said that the Harmain Sharifain Arabic-English Islamic Model University is the "first of its kind seminary where students can not only memorise Quran and Hadees within a span of 11 months, but also become proficient in three languages - English, Urdu and Arabic."

The convocation of the institution will be held on November 17 at the campus situated near Osmania University at Tarnaka. Eminent personalities from Kuwait, Oman and Iraq will be guests of honour and about 100 students from the different faculties will be awarded degrees, he said.
