Locally made firecracker burns through roof, injures family

The family doused the fire, but sustained minor burn injuries.

Bengaluru: Four members of a family sustained minor burns when a few firecracker balls fell inside their house, drilling through the asbestos sheets in VSS colony in Panathur Maratahalli police limits.

The incident took place around 8 pm on November 7. The police are checking the direction from which the firecrackers came in, while the bomb squad too visited the spot and collected the remains of the crackers for a lab analysis.

Marathahalli Police Inspector Sadiq Pasha said that though the explosive substance looked like countrymade cracker, they are waiting for reports from the Forensic Sciences Laboratory (FSL) to establish it.

Venkatesh (45), who works as a driver at Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, told Deccan Chronicle that he and his family were inside the house when he heard a blast and seconds later a few sparkles that fell on a sofa and dewan triggered the fire.

The family doused the fire, but sustained minor burn injuries. The injured have been identified as Venkatesh, his 66-year-old mother Rajamma, his 13-year-old son Mohit Gowda and his 17-year-old nephew Kishore Kumar. Neighbours, hearing the commotion, rushed in and helped Venkatesh’s family put out the fire.

The police suspect that someone would have tried their hand at preparing a crude cracker, and tried to burst it when it fell on the roof of Venkatesh’s house. The police have registered an FIR against unknown people, charging them under various sections of Explosive Substances Act.
