Bengaluru: In a freak accident, four law students sustained serious injuries after a lift collapsed when one of the cables snapped at a service apartment in M.M. Road in Frazer Town on Sunday night.
The injured students have been identified as Akshara (20), Tanushree Bose (24), Falak Patel (20) and Ishika (20). All of them, pursuing law at Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad, had come to the city two weeks ago for an internship and were staying at Silver Nest Apartment.
The incident happened around 9.30 pm when the four students, three of whom stay on the third floor, were coming down in the lift. "The lift first stopped on the second floor. As Tanushree stepped out, a wire holding the lift car snapped. As a result, the lift car landed on the ground with force. While the three students were stuck inside the lift car, Tanushree fell on top of the lift," the police said.
Apartment dwellers and neighbours rushed in to help the students and alerted the fire and emergency service personnel. The injured girls were rescued and shifted to Hosmat hospital for treatment around midnight, after a first-aid at a nearby hospital. Three have been admitted to the hospital.
Dr Thomas Chandy, Chief of Orthopaedics, Hosmat, said, "Akshara sustained a displaced fracture of right leg bone (tibia), fracture of one of the bones foot calcaneum (heel Bone) and dislocation of ankle joint (Subtalar joint). She underwent multiple emergency surgeries of external fixator and K-wire fixation. Tanushree has sustained displaced severe fractures in pelvic bones, sacrum (tail bone), unstable fractures of right ankle, left forearm and cut wound in the face and nose. She is in ICU for observation. She will undergo surgeries for the pelvis fracture (ileum) and sacroiliac joint (joint between pelvis and tail bone) and the sacrum (tail bone), on Tuesday," he said.
Dr Chandy said that Falaq Patel sustained unstable right ankle fracture and underwent surgery, while Ishika was treated as outpatient for the pain and soft tissue injury in the right ankle.
The Pulakeshinagar police on Sunday night visited the spot and conducted a probe. The police are waiting for the victims to recover to record their statements. The police have taken up a case of negligence causing grievous injuries against the building owner and the lift maintenance company.
