Kochi: Family support crucial for diabetes control

Apart from emotional impact, financial burden caused by disease is a matter of concern.

KOCHI: As the rate of incidence of diabetes is very high in the state, more than ten in every 100 people above 18 years and half of them living with the disease undiagnosed, doctors stress the role of the family in its management, care, prevention and education.

The theme of the World Diabetes Day 2018 and 2019, which is on November 14, is The Family and Diabetes. "Diabetes has a pronounced emotional impact upon families. Many different factors related to diabetes can contribute to anxiety. A diagnosis of diabetes can be a stressful event for families as a whole," said Dr Prasanth Sankar, consultant in diabetes and internal medicine at MGM Muthoot Medical Centre, Pathanamthitta.

"The two most important guidelines for family members are to have realistic expectations about blood glucose levels and to avoid blame. Blaming the patient for high or low blood sugar levels never helps, and frequently lead to hurt feelings, arguments or serious conflict."

Apart from the emotional impact, the financial burden caused by the disease also is concerning.

Though affordability of advanced diabetes drugs and glucose level monitoring equipment has increased, they are yet to be affordable for many families.
"Roughly, 80 per cent of type 2 diabetes cases are preventable, or its onset can be postponed through regular physical activity, a healthy and balanced diet and the promotion of healthy living environment," said Dr P. Jayaprakash, consultant endocrinologist, Medical Trust Hospital, Kochi.

"Family members of diabetic patients, especially their children, have to take extra care in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, considering the strong genetic factors."
According to Dr Jayaprakash, with a high number of diabetic patients, the Kerala society is gradually becoming more diet conscious with many families, especially in urban areas, maintaining a patient-friendly atmosphere.

"Early diagnosis and treatment are keys to help prevent or delay life-threatening complications," he added.
