Brave' women get no government support

Most women activists made attempt to visit Sabarimala during thulamasa puja banking on state government's assurance to provide protection.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With namajapa yatras now being taken out even to work places of women who on the strength of Supreme Court verdict attempted to visit Sabarimala temple, pressure is mounting on the government to provide security to such individuals.

Most women activists made attempt to visit Sabarimala during thulamasa puja banking on state government’s assurance to provide protection. The government and the party had reiterated that it would not ferry devotees to Sabarimala, but would provide security to any woman who wished to pray at the temple.

One of them, Bindu Thankam Kalyani, who made an attempt to enter temple on October 22, continues to face the wrath of protestors in Agali. She was evicted from her Koz-hikode residence, transferred from Kozhikode sch-ool to Agali Government Vocational Higher Second-ary School.

Sabarimala Karma Sa-mithi has launched an agitation to get Bindu ousted from Agali school. But their move is facing resistance from a section of dalit activsits and dalit outfits.

Most women activists are fighting a lonely battle in the face of attacks on their houses, assault and abuse from people masquerading as devotees. S.P. Manju a dalit leader was targeted for making an attempt to enter Sabarimala.

Surprisingly, the CPM led AIDWA is yet to counter the attack on behalf of the women, politically and organisationally. Barring statements from top leaders, the AIDWA is yet to organise a major counter campaign or protest.

“The police needs to be vigilant against such attacks,’’ said AIDWA state secretary P. Sathi Devi. But barring such statements there’s no major counter protest on the ground from these organisations.

Meanwhile, a section of dalit activists and dalit outfits have decided to launch a counter campaign. Civil society groups had organised a “sthree abhimana convention” in Kottayam on Saturday. The issue is likely to figure at the “We the People” an event being organised in defence of constitution here on Tuesday.
