IT raids against VK Sasikala wind down on fourth day

According to officials in the know, the raids are almost over and the assessment of seized properties, documents and valuables are underway.

Chennai: Raids by the Income Tax department on the properties of V.K. Sasikala and her family had entered the fourth and possibly final day on Sunday of massive search and survey operations. The raids, which began at 187 locations across the state on Thursday, continued at 15 locations on Sunday including the T Nagar properties of Vivek Jayaraman and Krishnapriya and in Kodanad Estate.

According to officials in the know, the raids are almost over and the assessment of seized properties, documents and valuables are underway. The pan-state operation in which an 1,800 strong contingent carried out ‘Operation Clean Money’ has seized several incriminating documents over the past four days and a detailed report of the same is to be sent to the Central Board of Direct Taxes.

The valuables and documents that are yet to be examined have been put under prohibitory orders, officials said. While many political leaders had questioned the timing of the raids, sources said that plans were made several months ago based on inputs from several agencies including the Finance Ministry’s Financial Intelligence Unit. Documents of shell companies formed to route money transactions have been unearthed and several bank accounts are likely to be frozen by the end of raids.
