Telangana DGP to help women, kids

New DGP takes aim at cases of abuse, vows to eradicate them.

Hyderabad: Director General of Police M. Mahendar Reddy, who took charge on Sunday, outlined measures that would be taken for the protection of women and children. One is a state-wide anti-chain-snatching drive to put an end to an offence that is being reported time and again.

“A drive will be taken up across all the districts in the state to ensure the protection and safety of women. Stringent action will be initiated against individuals or organised gangs indulging in chain- snatching,” he said.

A Bharosa centre will be set up in every district to help women in distress. “Women are getting speedy justice after the Bharosa centres were introduced in the state. A dedicated team is monitoring the flow of cases, trials, and rehabilitation or medical assistance to the victims,” he said.

The state police is conducting a year-long anti-child abuse drive and awareness campaign to put an end to the problem.

“There is an increase in the number of POCSO cases in the city and we will ensure that the campaign is done across the state. In all the cases there is good conviction. We want to send a warning to offenders or those intending to exploit children that they will get life sentences or 10 years imprisonment if convicted,” the DGP said. He said that more women constables will be posted at police stations.
