Airport forex unit runs out of change

The forex counters at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport stopped accepting the demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency.

Hyderabad: The foreign exchange counters at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad stopped accepting the demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency. “All the counters in the arrival and departure lounges have run out of lower denomination currency. Except for old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, we do not have any other Indian currency left with us as on date,” said an employee at a counter.

The ticket counters of airlines ran out of lower denomination currency, resulting in passengers complaining that they were not complying with the Centre’s advisory. The SBH ATM at the airport started to dispense with lower denomination currency on Saturday. A long queue mostly comprising airport staff was seen at the ATM as fewer passengers could afford to wait for long for their turn, officials at the airport told this correspondent.
