Kochi: The state government is set to make drastic changes in the higher education sector from next academic year onwards that includes a single window admission process for colleges under various universities in the state and doing away with the need for submitting equivalency certificate upon changing from one institution to another.
This was announced by Minister for Higher Education K.T. Jaleel while inaugurating the new building for BA Economics (Honours) course at the Maharajas College here.
“Currently if a student wants to join a college under the Kerala University from that under MG University, he or she has to produce an Equivalency certificate. There should be a change for the practice. All universities in the state should approve others. We’ll take measures for doing away the system,” the minister said.
More seats will be allocated in government colleges from next academic year onwards. The government aims to raise the standard of higher education institutes in the state in such a way that students from other states and even countries should come here to pursue their higher education, he said.
“Our aim is that there should be at least 100 international students enrolled under a single university from next academic year onwards. A special campaign will be held to spread the message that the educational institutions here are much safer when compared to that of other states,” Jaleel said.
He promised to take up with the Finance minister the request of the college authorities to regularise two self-financing courses being offered by the college now.
The minister asked the college authorities to institute work and earn awards in the name of Abhimanyu, an SFI activist and a BSc Chemistry student of the college who was murdered allegedly by Campus Front of India activists in July last.
