Hyderabad: Depressed engineering student attempts to end his life
Hyderabad: Depressed over the detention system, a 19-year-old engineering student from Hyderabad attempted suicide by climbing a tower at Sultan Bazaar at Koti on Friday. The student who hails from Warangal district was studying in an affiliated engineering college in Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTUH), Hyderabad.
The student was reportedly depressed as he was detained in the first year due to fewer credits. However, the Sultan Bazaar police officials rescued the student and counselled him.
The student took the extreme step after OU refused to budge despite several requests, representations and protest at the JNTUH.
The Telangana Engineering Joint Action Committee (JAC) alleged that the student tried to commit suicide because he was depressed over detention rules and, despite approaching varsity officials many times, the student did not get justice.
K. Subbarami Reddy, Station House Officer-Sultan Bazaar Police Station said, “At around 2 pm, a student named Rajnikanth climbed a tower in Sultan Bazaar limits. But we rescued him and asked the reason for his suicide attempt and he replied that he was depressed over the detention system. We also spoke to the university officials who informed us that it was the student’s mistake for not studying and attending classes. They said that they were just common rules which they followed and these cannot change.”
