Karnataka: Auto driver washed away in heavy rain

Vijay and his friends had gone for a picnic to Kanakapura in his auto on Tuesday.

Bengaluru: A 26-year-old auto driver got washed away into a lake due to heavy rain on Tuesday night. The incident occurred at Gantakadoddi in Kaggalipura on the city outskirts.

The deceased has been identified as Santhosh, a resident of Banashankari in the city. His body was fished out on Thursday.

According to the police, Santhosh along with his friends, Vijay, and two other girls had gone for a picnic to Kanakapura in his auto on Tuesday. They had visited a temple and had a party later before leaving to the city.

It was past midnight and they stopped near a lake at Gantakadoddi due to heavy rain. Santhosh asked his friends to get down as the auto was not moving due to water logging.

"While the girls got down and moved to safety, Santhosh and Vijay tried to push the auto. But as it was raining heavily, water levels increased. While Vijay escaped, Santhosh got washed away along with the auto into the lake. His friends started screaming for help, but nobody was present. The incident came to the notice of police early on Wednesday morning and efforts were made to retrieve Santhosh's body, but they failed. When the rescue personnel of the fire and emergency department searched for his body again on Thursday, it was found and fished out by afternoon. However, the auto rickshaw is yet to be found," the police said.
