Commandos rush to Goa amid threats to Brics summit
New Delhi: Unprecedented security arrangements are being made for the two-day Brics summit to be held in Goa on October 15 and 16 following Intelligence inputs that Pakistan based terror groups could target the high-profile gathering.
Heads of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa will be attending the conference. The home ministry which is monitoring security arrangements for the summit has taken a serious note of the reports and decided to deploy special commando units from para-military forces including elite National Security Guards and ITBP.
Dog squads of the ITBP which specialise in anti-sabotage checks have also been sent to Goa which will be deployed at various venues that will be visited by the VIPs.
“We are confident that as the host country we will be able to provide a foolproof security cover to the summit and it will be a grand success. The security arrangements are being monitored regularly by senior officials and adequate deployment has been made. The elite K9 dog squad of ITBP which was used to secure our assets in Afghanistan has also been deployed for the summit,’’a home ministry official said.
Intelligence sources admitted that in wake of surgical strikes by India there is a strong possibility that Pak terror groups would carry out a “spectacular strike’’ at the high-profile place.
It is estimated that as many as 900 delegates would be attending the conference. In wake of the high security alert across the country, the home ministry had issued an advisory to the States, particularly which have important cities, on Monday to deploy additional security personnel at crowded places like shopping balls, railways stations, etc.''
