Bengaluru: After failing to recover property tax dues, the BBMP has released a list of the top five property tax defaulters in each of its 8 zones.
Mr. M Shivaraju, Chairperson of the BBMP Standing Committee for Taxation and Finance, said, "For the year 2016-17 (till September 12th) we have collected Rs 1527 crores from over 11,41,393 properties in the city."
The list of defaulters include shopping malls, convention centers, tech parks, IT companies and apartments whose combined tax dues stand at Rs 161.84 crores.
“We have issued notices to these defaulters”, he added. Although some property owners have paid tax under the self-assessment scheme, a survey carried out by out by the BBMP on big defaulters have found that there is a difference in the total area declared by them against the tax payable.
“The combined tax due along with fine and interest from top 10 defaulters stands at Rs 231.66 crores”, Mr. Shivaraj added. He also said that measures have been initiated against all defaulters and notices have been sent. "If they do not pay back their dues, we are empowered under section 147 of schedule 3 of Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, to take action against the defaulters.”
He continued, “We have also taken measures to re-possess Malleswaram market, Rajajinagar market and Johnson market, which was mortgaged to the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO),” Mr. Shivaraj said.
