Hyderabad: Excited police officials are revealing too much information

Senior police officials said that the handling of the accused during the investigation is very important.

Hyderabad: Disclosing the investigation procedure that led to the arrest of an offender is leading to the delay in apprehending suspects in other cases.

Investigators, in the ‘excitement’ of catching an offender, reveal too much information before the offender, which is a concern for their superiors who feel it is one of the prime reasons for unsolved cases.

During the course of interrogation, police officials are sometimes found to be discussing crucial leads which led to nabbing the accused and sometimes, unintentionally these discussions have happened in front of offenders, who are then extra cautious when they commit another offence.

Senior police officials said that the handling of the accused during the investigation is very important, as a slip of the tongue by the investigating officer may alert the accused who will share the information with other offenders involved in similar cases.

Sharing of experiences is noticed commonly among such offenders and they become aware of the mistake that led to others being caught and will avoid making that mistake the next time, said a police officer.

Another senior police officer said that the information in the final report or the charge-sheet, containing details of the investigation procedure and other details regarding a case, are given to the accused and complainant only after filing it before a court.

“Investigating officers of the ranks of sub-inspector, inspector and deputy superintendent of police, are advised to not disclose details about an investigation through any form before it is submitted to the court. Otherwise, it is indirectly aiding the offender how to avoid the police and evade arrest,” said the officer.
