Kerala floods: Red alert in 8 districts

IMD forecasts heavy rain.

Thiruvananthapuram: Due to the heavy rainfall, India Meteorological Depa-rtment has kept eight districts - Alappuzha, Ernak-ulam, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur in the red alert category for Monday. Red alert has been declared in Wayanad and Idukki districts for Tue-sday also.

Heavy rainfall of 7 to 11cm in 24 hours to very heavy rainfall of 12 to 20 cm in 24 hours is most likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala on Monday. Heavy rainfall at one or two places is also likely to occur on August 14.

Death toll in the rains and the subsequent floods in the state for the last one week is 37 till Sunday. Apart from that 5 persons have been reported missing. The total number of persons in relief camps as on Sunday is 1,01,213. The-re are a total of 13,857 families in 1,023 camps on Su-nday.

As per the instructions of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, steps have been taken to give special care to children, elderly and differntially-abled persons in the camp. Steps have been taken to provide drinking water and medical aid in camps. As per estimates, 243 houses have been fully damaged and 4,392 partially damaged due to rain.

Strong winds mainly from Westerly direction, with speed reaching 35 to 45 kmph gusting to 55 to 60 kmph occasionally, are likely along and off Karn-ataka coast.

Strong winds from Wes-terly to North westerly dir-ection, with speed reaching 30 to 35 kmph gusting to 45 to 55 kmph occasionally, are likely along and off Kerala coast and over Lakshadweep area.

Sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough over Southwest and central Arabian Sea for 24 hours from 6 p.m. on Sunday. Fishermen are advised not to venture over Southwest and Central Arabian Sea. There is a possibility of flooding in low lying coa-stal areas, especially during high tide timings due to the perigean spring tides for the period till August 15.

Sustained strong onshore winds, high near shore waves or swells and heavy rainfall and associated discharge can cause nuisance flooding especially at high tide times along low lying coastal areas.

Rain occurred at most pl-aces in Kerala and at many places in Lakshadweep on Sunday. The chief amount of rain in cm are:

Munnar (Idukki district) and Kudlu (Kasargode di-strict) 6 each, Kozhikode, Vadakara (Kozhikode district) and Mananthavady (Wayanad district) four each, Kannur, Irikkur, Taliparamba & Thalassery (all in Kannur district), Idukki, Vadakkancherry (Thrissur district), Mann-arkad (Palakkad district), Quilandy (Kozhikode district), Vythiri (Wayanad district) and Hosdurg (Kas-argode district) three each, Karipur AP, Manjeri and Perinthalmanna (all in Ma-lappuram district), Palak-kad, Kollengode, Ottappa-lam and Parambikulam (in Palakkad district), Vaikom (Kottayam district), Chala-kudy (Thrissur district), Kuppady and Ambalavayal (both in Wayanad district) two each and Alappuzha, Haripad (Alappuzha district), C.I.A.L. Kochi, Peru-mbavur and Piravom (all in Ernakulam district), Minicoy (Lakshadweep), Vellanikkara and Irinja-lakuda (both in Thrissur district), Myladumpara (Idukki district), Alathur, Pattambi and Thrithala (all in Palakkad district) one each.
