Bengaluru: By year-end, you can rate metro station on app

There are 10 categories in the index under which 110 indicators are administered against a Metro station to see where it stands.

Bengaluru: If all goes well, by the end of 2017, transport authorities will be able to see ratings of Namma Metro station's service and receive suggestions.

CiFOS (Citizens for Sustainability), one of the winners in the 'Station Access Mobility Program', are working on developing a 'Transport Accessibility Index' and a mobile app to determine the service levels at Metro stations.

STAMP, a brainchild of Toyota Mobility Foundation and World Resources Institute, has given winners a grant of Rs 8-10 lakh each, of the total Rs 40 lakh, to implement the project. They will work in tandem with all government agencies, including BMRCL, BMTC, DULT, UDD, BBMP and others.

A member of CiFOS, Sathya Sankaran, said, “There are 10 categories in the index under which 110 indicators are administered against a Metro station to see where it stands. For example, average waiting time for a feeder bus in front of a Metro station, percentage of bus stops, etc." Multi modal integration, walk-ability and related factors will be judged in a 500 metres radius around a metro station. Their Transport Accessibility Index, Sankaran says, is modeled on the standard index used by the Ministry of Urban Development Department. All this would involve a lot of tedious, manual data collection from the field, for which, CiFOS is developing a mobile app to make things quicker.

"The app, for instance, contains the distance and time taken for a feeder or cab service to arrive at the Metro station and compare it against the index. The result on quality of service is produced by the smartphone app," Sankaran said.
