Hyderabad: The state is close to witnessing a “Break Monsoon period”, which usually occurs in mid-August.
During this time, there is no cloud formation or rain and the day temperatures rise. Hyderabad on Friday recorded a maximum temperature of 33ºC, 3ºC higher than normal. Khammam recorded 35ºC, the highest.
During the rainy season, there are periods when the monsoon trough shifts closer to the foothills of the Himalayas, which leads to a sharp decrease in rainfall over most parts of the country. Such a synoptic situation is known as the “break monsoon period”, a weather expert said.
IMD director Y.K. Reddy said, “In case there is a dry period of two weeks or 10 days, it will be considered a break monsoon period. Even if the weak monsoon prolongs, it can be considered as a break monsoon.”
He said there appeared to be no rainfall possible for five days, as the monsoon currents were weak. The forecast up to August 17 is light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places. Nizamabad and Khammam received moderate rain on Friday.
Since the start of the monsoon, the state has received 4 per cent extra rainfall. Among the 10 districts, Hyderabad, Medak, Mahbubnagar and Ranga Reddy have recorded deficit rainfall.
The Met department stated that a depression over Jharkhand and neighbouring areas that was static on Friday was very likely to move west-northwest and weaken into a well marked low pressure area during the next 12 hours.
