Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has asked for a competent senior officer, who can speak on behalf of all the stakeholders, including state government, who is responsible for cleaning up Bellandur lake, to be present before it on Friday.

The court was hearing the PIL filed by Rajya Sabha Member D. Kupendra Reddy, and a resident of HSR Layout, seeking directions to the government agencies to clean up the lake along with taking preventive measures against water pollution.

The court while passing oral directions, asking a special officer to be present before it, also expressed displeasure against the authorities for failing to clean up the lake.

“The government has failed to do the small job of cleaning up a lake for over three years. What are they doing?” the court observed while asking for an officer to be present to speak on behalf of the respondents.

The court also observed that in addition the city was facing multiple problems, including traffic, sanitation, garbage amongst others. When the court asked as to what has been done so far with regard to monitoring Bellandur Lake, the government responded that a committee has been formed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to monitor measures being taken to prevent frequent fires that affect the lake.
