Grow more trees to protect environment, says Governor

The organic manure and the vermi compost have several advantages over the chemical fertilisers and pesticides.

Chennai: Governor Banwarilal Purohit has called for renewed efforts to grow more trees to protect the environment from pollution.

“More trees and plants should be grown to protect our environment from pollution. Also, to reduce chemical fertilisers, organic fruits, vegetables and cereals should be grown and consumed so that we can have better health and our future generations will be healthier,” he said while speaking after distributing vermi compost bags produced in Raj Bhavan campus to headmasters of 70 schools to create awareness on solid waste management among students.

Addressing the headmasters and demonstrating the method of vermi compost production for replicating them in their school campus, the Governor said the knowledge disseminated to the students in their young age about vermi composting would make them adopt good solid waste management practices and also organic farming in their life period.

The dry leaves obtained from the Raj Bhavan campus, which abound in trees, and other bio-degradable waste collected from residential quarters are dumped in a micro composting pit to generate manure and vermi compost, Mr Purohit said.

“This is used as fertilizer and being applied in the gardens of Raj Bhavan and the excess manure and vermi compost are packed and given to schools free of cost,” he added.

The organic manure and the vermi compost have several advantages over the chemical fertilisers and pesticides and they could be used to increase the fertility of soil and agriculture production through organic farming, he said.
