App based cabs under transport department lens
Bengaluru: Taking note of the recent cases of passengers, especially women, being harassed by cab drivers, the Transport Department is planning to direct the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) to carry out surprise checks on the taxies affiliated with the app-based cab aggregators.
The Transport Department is planning a meeting with the cab companies to direct them to ensure the implementation necessary safety measures.
A senior officer from the department told Deccan Chronicle that they have been receiving complaints of cabs being driven by non-registered drivers.
“The companies register a driver to work for them after certain formalities. But when the registered driver goes out of town or is away for duty, he gives the cab to another person, who is not registered with the company, to earn the extra buck or complete the trips. This is totally unethical and the companies have turned a blind eye towards this practice.”
“This has become a major issue and we have been receiving complaints about such cases,” the officer added. “The drivers are indulging in unethical practices and before something worse could happen, we are planning to take up surprise checks. We will inform the traffic police department and co-ordinate with them to carry out the drive.”
Another officer mentioned that the issue is a major threat to the security of the passengers. The cab operators need to take this up on priority and there are more factors which will be discussed with the operators in the meeting which is going to be scheduled at the earliest.
