No immediate threat to J Sekhar Reddy, says Tamil Nadu police
Chennai: As far as the assessment of the Tamil Nadu police, there is no immediate threat to J. Sekhar Reddy, the sand don who was arrested by the CBI and Enforcement Directorate after a huge quantity of unaccounted cash and gold were seized from him during income tax raids in December 2016.
“As far as we know there is no input about a possible threat on the life of Sekhar Reddy. So we don't think he deserves a PSO with a gun now,” a senior Tamil Nadu police officer said on Wednesday.
Sekhar Reddy, a sacked Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams board member, who is out of jail on conditional bail had written to the special cell of the Delhi police, Union home secretary and state home secretary seeking adequate protection to him and his family members.
He had claimed that he faces threat from criminals lodged in Puzhal central prison, Chennai. He claimed that some inmates were conspiring to attack or abduct him by engaging their associates outside.
It may be recalled that during raids income tax department had seized a total of Rs 131 crore cash, including Rs 34 crore worth new notes of Rs 2000 and 177 kg gold from him and two of his associates.“We don’t have specified information about a conspiracy to abduct or attack him to extort money. If we have any such information about any person we will arrest such criminals before deciding on giving protection to Sekhar Reddy,” the senior official added. Sekhar Reddy is out on bail case of money laundering being probed by the ED as well CBI case related to possession of Rs 33 crore in new Rs 2,000 notes.
