Mosquitoes give sleepless nights to Guntur people

The vacant lands, stagnant drains and littering of the streets is turning into mosquito breeding centres in the city.

GUNTUR: People in Guntur are having sleepless nights due to mosquito menace. The vacant lands, stagnant drains and littering of the streets is turning into mosquito breeding centres in the city. The people are lamenting there was no use of “Domala Pai Danda Yat-ra” (war on mosquitoes) programme by the government as the mosquito menace increased with simple rains. They wanted the government to keep the city clean. Guntur Municipal Corporation started taking action against people keeping lands vacant to restrain them from turning into mosquito breeding centres. There are 1,500 vacant lands in the city and the GMC issued notifications to the owners of the lands to develop them and to curb stagnation of water. They don’t want the lands to turn into mosquito breeding centres in this rainy season.

Residents of Arundel-peta N. Gopala Rao and others lamented that there were no mosquitoes in the summer season but now-a-days mosquitoes largely increased after rains. They lamented that the stagnation of waste water in the drains and garbage piles became a big menace to the public. They said that besides the undeveloped vacant lands also mosquito breeding was taking place due to stocking of water and waste. They lamented that the public is forced to remain in closed doors equipped with mosquito nets without the free flowing of fresh air. They said that if they open the doors, mosquitoes are spoiling their sleep and they are becoming victims of fevers due to mosquito bites. The locals of Cobaltpeta and adjacent areas alleged absence of fogging by the GMC.
