SC to hear on July 14 petitions challenging Neet ordinance

Dr Anand Rai, whistleblower and rights activist, said by way of this ordinance the states have been enabled to conduct their own entrance exams.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear on Thursday petitions challenging the Neet ordinance granting exemption to the states to admit students in government medical colleges through their own common entrance tests for the academic year 2016-2017. On Tuesday a Bench headed by Justice Anil R. Dave directed the matter to be listed on July 14 after Justice L. Nageswara Rao recused from hearing the case as he did on the last occasion.

Dr Anand Rai, whistleblower and rights activist, said by way of this ordinance the states have been enabled to conduct their own entrance exams in respect of state government seats (whether in government medical colleges or private medical colleges) for the academic year 2016-17, essentially implying exemption from Neet for some states.

He pointed out that the government of India itself had accepted in the apex court the need for a unified uniform examination for undergraduate and postgraduate level and was of the opinion that the situation in the present scenario was that Neet ought to be conducted with urgency.

The CBSE which is conducting the Neet even provided a schedule to this court which is recorded in the orders of this court dated 27.04.2016, 28.04.2016 and May 9.
