SC probe panel indicts ex-CBI chief Ranjit Sinha in coal scam
New Delhi: The probe panel appointed by the Supreme Court on Tuesday indicted the former CBI Director Ranjit Sinha, holding him guilty of interfering with the investigation in the coal block allocation cases.
Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi appearing before a three-judge Bench of Justices Madan B. Lokur, Kurian Joseph and A.K. Sikri submitted that the former Special Director of CBI M. L. Sharma had submitted his report in a sealed cover and the report points a needle of suspicion towards Mr. Sinha.
The court had asked Mr. Sharma to probe whether the meetings which Mr Sinha had with coal block allocation accused and other had in any way impacted the probe and subsequent charge sheets or closure reports filed by the CBI.
The A-G said the report largely is against Mr. Sinha but said Mr. Sinha did not reverse the decision of his investigating officers in closing the coal cases.
The report says that the diary noting of the entries at the residence of Mr. Sinha, produced by advocate Prashant Bhushan in the court are genuine; large number of people met Mr. Sinha at his residence as per diary entries and some are accused in coal cases and needle of suspicion is against him. The Bench said it will pass appropriate orders soon.
