Thiruvananthapuram: DYFI, under its Hridayapoorvam programme, has been feeding poor patients and their bystanders, at the Government Medical College Hospital here for three years now.
So far, they claim, their volunteers have distributed 55 lakh lunch packets, with 5,000 on average daily.
At Hridayapoorvam makeshift counter, the queue is orderly, unlike the rush seen at the opening of dining halls at a wedding reception. On Tuesday, the queue stretched beyond the road.
It's one packet to a person, but some try to outsmart volunteers by hoping to get another one.
"No, we don't encourage such requests because we fear it may not leave just sufficient food for everyone in the queue," the volunteer at the counter.
The CPM feeder outfit launched Hridayapoorvam (straight from the heart) on January 1, 2017. The slogan was 'Vayaru eriyunnavarude mizhi nirayathirikatte.
