Kochi Metro: Anniversary gifts to include free rides

Kochi Metro was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 17 last year.

KOCHI: Kochi Metro Rail Limited is all set to celebrate the first anniversary of Kochi Metro operations next week with many activities including free ride for passengers on June 19. KMRL is planning weeklong activities in connection with the completion of one year of operations. Kochi Metro was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 17 last year. The celebrations will start with cutting a cake at Edappally station on June 17.

“KMRL would like to thank Kochietes for the love and support on the anniversary day on June 19 by making all rides in Kochi Metro free. Aluva RHS (Right Hand Side) entry will also be opened for public at 2 pm on June 19. Besides, there will be a lucky draw with many gifts to win for those travelling between 15th to 18th,” said Muhammad Hanish, KMRL chief.

A magic show by Gopinath Muthukad will be another attraction of the anniversary celebrations. His special show ‘Time Traveller- Magic Metro’ would be performed on June 17 at 11.30 am at Edappally station. Other Cultural activities have also been planned at Edappally, Aluva and Maharajas stations KMRL and Axis bank has jointly decided to waive off the initial charges for taking Kochi 1 card during the anniversary week. The issuance fee of Rs 150 and annual fee of Rs 75 will be waived from 15th to 30th June.

KMRL is planning to plant 520 trees inside the Muttom yard during the anniversary week. Every employee would have one tree in his or her name and they will be encouraged to maintain it. It is also planned to do organic farming within the Muttom yard. Vice-President of India Venkaiah Naidu has agreed to release Kochi Metro 365, the coffee table book connecting the Metro and the human moments in last 365 days. The date would be finalised later. The Kudumbasree and security staff at stations will be honoured during a special function to be organised in association with Local Self Government department.
