Pall of gloom over Gangavalli as 2 youth drown

Their friends tried to pull them out but in vain.

Salem: People of Gangavalli in Salem district were confronted with a painful paradox on Sunday as two college students drowned in a local lake, even as most water bodies in the district have turned dry due to the scorching summer.

Police said that a domestic function at the house of Abishek, 21, a third year B.Sc. student in a private college near Rasipuram, had brought four of his friends- Sivasankar, 21, of Athur, Gokul,21, Ajith, 21, Sasikumar, 21, and Manikandan, 21, all of Namakkal- to the former house in Gangavalli.

After the function was over all five led by Aishek to ward of the summer heat went to a nearby lake at Valasakalpatti to bathe, police said.

But unfortunately two of the youth- Sivasankar and Gokul- got trapped in the slushy part of the lake and were drowned.

Their friends tried to pull them out but in vain. On information, police and fire and rescue services personnel from Gangavalli rushed to the spot, retrieved the two bodies and sent it to Athur government hospital for post-mortem. Gangavalli police have registered a case, but the news of the two youth drowning in a lake with hardly any water, shocked and grieved the locals, more so as the youth wished to enjoy their summer holidays.
