Congress, UDF to study poll prospects

The KPCC office-bearers will meet on Tuesday morning which will be followed by a meeting of the political affairs committee.

Thiruvananthapuram: The KPCC will be back in action from this week onwards ahead of the Lok Sabha election results are announced on May 23. The KPCC and the UDF will hold a series of meetings at Indira Bhavan here to weigh the possibilities of the party and the front faring well in the elections.

The UDF liaison committee will meet at 10 a.m. on Monday when Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala will return from the US where he had gone on a visit.

Due to the poll code of conduct, the UDF meeting cannot be held at Cantonment House, the official residence of the Opposition Leader.

The KPCC office-bearers will meet on Tuesday morning which will be followed by a meeting of the political affairs committee.

"The meetings will take up the complaints raised by Mr Shashi Tharoor, candidate in Thiruvananthapuram, and Mr V. K. Sreekandan of Palakkad over the lack of support from the cadres during the election campaign," said a senior Congress MLA.

KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran had kicked off talks on party revamping with the AICC leadership two weeks ago. A section of leaders is opposed to the reorganisation.

"If the UDF gets a sizeable number of Lok Sabha seats, the group leaders may oppose any revamp. If the UPA manages to form a government at the centre, the revamp will be delayed further by another one month or so," a KPCC general secretary told DC.

But Mr Mullappally may not be able to continue in the post without a revamped party. During the course of his visits across the state earlier, the KPCC president realised the poor party structure, especially at the booth level. In several constituencies, the booth committees were inactive and the local leadership had not taken note of it till the fag end of the campaigning.
