Karnataka Assembly polls 2018: Minor scuffles mar smooth polling in city

Most of the fights were reported among booth level workers of Congress and BJP.

Bengaluru: The city was peaceful on election day, barring some incidents of scuffles between rival political parties in and around the city on Saturday. Most of the fights were reported among booth level workers of Congress and BJP.

In Vijayanagar, a trivial row turned into a clash between the workers of Congress and BJP near Virupaksha Swamy Education society polling booth at Hampi Nagar.

The clash was over arranging of tables to help voters get their voting slips near the polling booth. Hampi Nagar ward councilor Anand C. Hosur sustained minor injuries.

The police intervened and brought the situation under control. The corporator was rushed to a private hospital and more security personnel were deployed.

A similar incident took place at Vishveshvaraya college in CV Raman Nagar constituency where Konena Agrahara ward corporator Chandrappa Reddy and his son Madhusudhan Reddy were allegedly assaulted by a group of workers from the opposition party.

The fight broke out near booth no. 113 at Vishveshwaraiah college over a trivial issue. The duo sustained minor injuries in the incident.

In Yelahanka, a group of BJP workers barged into the polling booth number 38, alleging that Congress party workers were inside the booth to influence the voters.

In Anekal constituency, a Congress worker tried to assault policemen when he was questioned for loitering near the poll booth in Attibele.

The accused, Shivu, was found near a poll booth on Saturday afternoon and was allegedly forcing voters to cast votes for Congress party.

The constables who were in charge of the polling booth told him to leave and when he resisted, they alerted police sub-inspector M.K. Muralidhar, who questioned him about his whereabouts.

Shivu refused to answer and picked up a fight with the sub-inspector. He even held him by the collar. He fled while the police were trying to clear the crowd that had gathered near the polling booth.

The Attibele police have registered an FIR under IPC section 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and are on the lookout for the accused.
