With 7 percentage dip, Karnataka fails in SSLC too

Three students score a perfect 625/625.

Bengaluru: A day after the poor II PUC final results were announced, the state recorded its worst SSLC pass percentage in seven years, leaving state education minister, Tanveer Sait dealing with awkward questions yet again. But despite the overall poor percentage, three students made history of sorts by scoring a perfect 625/625. This has happened only once before in the history of the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEE), according to official sources.

The students with the perfect score were Sumanth Hegade of MES Kishore Kendra, Malleshwaram in Bengaluru, Pallavi Shirahatti of SRA Composite PU college, Banahatti in Bagalkot and Poornanda H. of St. Jockims High School in Kadaba, Puttur taluk, South Canara.

But most others did miserably as going by the KSEEB, of the 8,56,286 students who appeared for the SSLC board examination, only 5,81,134 or 67. 87 per cent were able to clear it as against the 75.11 per cent, who got through last year. Among the regular fresh candidates, the pass percentage was 73.26 according to Mr Sait.

While Udupi district topped with a pass percentage of 84.23, it was followed by South Canara which came close with a 82.39 pass percentage.

Releasing the results, Mr. Sait claimed the 8 per cent drop in the SSLC passes was partly due to the measures taken by the KSEEB to ensure total transparency in the conduct of the examination. "Also, no grace marks were given to make sure that only students who had worked hard, cleared the examination," he said.

Not everyone performed badly either, according to him. The pass percentage among the 3,000 students studying in the 72 Adarsha Vidyalayas established under the RMSA scheme was as high as 93.89% and among the 19,506 students studying in residential schools started under various government schemes it was was a high 92.28%. Warning schools against misusing the 20 per cent internal marks weightage scheme to improve their pass percentage, the minister said PU colleges too must have the same cut-off percentages for both boys and girls among their students.
