Psychologists said that this could be due to girls being seen as healthy competitors when in co-ed schools. “Boys, generally, have much more distractions while girls are more sincere and focused when it comes to studies. In the presence of girls, a competition brews,” said city-based psychologist, Dr. Abilasha.

She added that another reason is that girls are helpful with notes and classroom learning, lending their support and notes to boys, which could be a motivating factor.

Psychologist B. Elayaraja said that being in a co-educational school increased the gender-based competition, which is lacked in a same-gender environment.

Samy Sathyaraj, state president of the Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary School Head Masters Association, said: “Boys in same-sex schools have distractions like cinemas, gaming, phones and even liquor creeping to be one major one. The state of education in smaller towns and municipal bodies also depends on the teachers, focus of parents on a child’s education and the peers.
