Row hits Manuu order on hostels in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: Shortage of hostels in the 18-year-old Maulana Azad National Urdu University has resulted in a tiff between students and university administration.
A notice released by Manuu instructed students to vacate their hostel rooms before leaving for vacations. It was accompanied by a warning: Locks would be broken and students’ luggage would be removed, The notice was served so that the university can start implementing an agreement which students sign while taking admission.
The agreement has clauses that state that the hostel is allotted to students for a single academic year and they have to apply afresh for the next year. Till last year the agreement was never adhered to by the university and the students would continue to stay in the same room till their course came to an end.
Now with the university trying to enforce the agreement, some students might lose their hostel rooms as from 2016-17, Manuu plans to allot hostels on merit basis, on students' performance in previous semester.
Manuu gets around 1,000 new students every year in various streams and a majority of them are from other states, mainly Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Kerala. However, the university has hostel rooms that can accommodate only 820 boys and 450 girls.
As per a senior official, the move to allot hostels on merit basis is to ensure that the same students do not continue to stay in hostels and every year new students are given a chance to stay in hostels.
