Four new Supreme Court judges to be sworn-in today
New Delhi: The Chief Justices of Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Allahabad High Courts and senior advocate L. Nageswara Rao will be sworn-in as judges of the Supreme Court on Friday.
Chief Justice of India T.S. Thakur will administer the oath of office to four new judges at the First Court Hall. President Pranab Mukherjee had signed the warrant of appointments on Thursday.
Justices Dhananjay Chandrachud and Khanwilkar belong to Maharashtra and Justice Bhushan is from Uttar Pradesh. Mr Nageswara Rao, who represented Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate assets case in the Karnataka High Court and the apex court, who hails from AP, will also take oath
The SC already had three judges from Maharashtra — Justices S.A. Bobde, Rohinton Nariman and Uday Lalit.
Justice Chandrachud, who is the son of former Chief Justice of India Y.V. Chandrachud, will become the Chief Justice of India in 2022.
The present strength of judges in the apex court is 25 as against the sanctioned strength of 31. With the elevation of three High Court Chief Justices and one senior lawyer the strength will go upto 29. The last appointment of Justice Amitav Roy to the apex court was made in February 2015. Subsequently no recommendation was made as the Centre enacted the National Judicial Appointments Commission, which was struck down in October 2015.
