The ice cubes that are being widely used now for juice and ice creams are also under the special check of the FSSAI.

Kozhikode: The health department will take steps to ensure supply of good quality potable water even as district reels under acute shortage of drinking water, District Medical Officer Dr Jayashree has said on Friday. Wells and quarries from where potable water is supplied would be checked regularly. A plan was being devised for quality check, she added.

Health authorities are also on alert to check the supply of contaminated ice during festivals and celebrations where cool drinks are served, the DMO said. At the same time packaged water is transported in a hurry in bubble top containers and the quality of this packaged drinking water is going unchecked and hence the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has been asked to conduct regular inspections to ensure the quality of packed drinking water.

ISI certificates are must in the 20 litre can that is being widely distributed in several parts of the district. Also the package drinking water companies have been directed to not transport the water cans in open vehicles so that the water does not comes under direct contact of the sun. The ice cubes that are being widely used now for juice and ice creams are also under the special check of the FSSAI, said Eliyamma, FSSAI assistant commissioner.
