Chennai: Showroom asked to pay for wrong car registration number

The showroom staff wrongly allotted registration number TN-19 AD- 2852 instead of TN 19 AD- 2842 on May 11, 2017.

Chennai: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram District directed a car showroom to pay a compensation of Rs 30,000 to a woman for wrongly allotting registration number of a new vehicle purchased by her two years ago. The showroom staff wrongly allotted registration number TN-19 AD- 2852 instead of TN 19 AD- 2842 on May 11, 2017.

The petitioner P.Seethalakshmi of Guduvancheri, submitted that she wished to purchase a new car for her home needs in April 2017. She purchased the Maruti Suzuki Celerio Zxi AMT

for Rs.5,35,075 from Vishnu Cars Private Limited, Chrompet. On April 26, 2017 the vehicle was registered with the RTO, Chengalpattu. Branch Manager, E outlet, Vishnu Car Private Limited, handed over the Maruti Suzuki Celerio with the number TN-19 AD 2852.

On May 11, 2017 the vehicle was taken by sales executive Mohammed Farooq to the showroom for fixing accessories. When it was delivered she had noticed the vehicle's registration number was changed from TN?19 AD?2852 to TN - 19 AD?2842 without even informing her. She stated that the action of the showroom caused her mental agony. She sought a direction to MD and Branch Manager, E-outlet, Vishnu Car Private Limited, Chrompet to pay a compensation of Rs 9 lakh for committing deficiency in service and hardship.

In the reply, the MD and Branch Manger admitted that registration of vehicle with concerned RTO was done by staff of the concerned showroom. Before fixing the accessories, the complainant was informed about the change in registration number of the car. The mistake was committed due to miscommunication between the RTO agent and the staff. The showroom staff found that the car registration number bearing TN?19?AD- 2852 was wrongly given instead of TN?19?AD?2842, which was orally communicated to her on May 11, 2017.

The bench comprising President J.Justin David and member K.Prameela, said the sale executive came to the house of the complainant and informed that they wanted to place some accessories in the vehicle and took it to the service centre. But the staff have not placed any accessories in the vehicle and in turn they changed the registration number. The action amounts to negligent act. The bench directed the MD and Branch Manger to pay Rs 30,000 for causing mental agony to her due to the deficiency in service.
