Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala calls for judicial probe

Mr Chennithala said that police lock-ups have become murder chambers under the LDF govetrnment led by Pinarayi Vijayan.

KOCHI: Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala called for a judicial probe headed by the district judge into the death of Sreejith in police custody in Varapuzha. Speaking to reporters after visiting the bereaved family members, Mr Chennithala called for expelling all police officials involved in the incident from the service and registering FIR against all of them for murder.

The opposition leader alleged that no action was taken against the sub-inspector of Varapuzha police station despite several complaints prevailing against him. The police had flouted all norms and rules, including conducting a medical examination, that needed to be observed while arresting a person at night. Mr Chennithala said that police lock-ups have become murder chambers under the LDF govetrnment led by Pinarayi Vijayan.

The demise of Sreejith is the sixth incident of lock-up deaths since the LDF government assumed power, he added. Mr Chennithala was accompanied by N. Paravur MLA V.D. Satheesan and other Congress leaders in the district. Meanehile, BJP state general secretary A.N. Radhakrishnan has said he would hold a 24-hour fast before the IG office in Ernakulam on Monday. He also called for government job to wife of the deceased and a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the family.
