Chennaiites can visit DefExpo tomorrow

Public visitors can see the expo from 9 am to 5.30 pm.

Chennai: Chennaiites will get a chance to see modern warfare machinery both, domestic and foreign, as DefExpo is set to open its gates to the public on Saturday.

Heavy vehicles ranging from tanks, trawls and others are to be displayed on the sandy beach of Thiruvidandhai during the live demonstration of land, naval and aero capabilities of the Indian defence forces.

Public visitors can see the expo from 9 am to 5.30 pm. "Although no entry fees would be collected from the public, the visitors should possess photo identity cards such as Aadhaar and passport, both original and photocopy," one of the organisers said.

On Thursday, the scorching heat of afternoon sun did not deter spectators from being enthralled by 8 Marcos (Marine Commanders), who performed skydiving from an indigenously manufactured Dornier aircraft from 6,000 feet.
Four warships including INS Sumitra and INS Kamorta demonstrated their prowess of clearing anti-aircraft facilities in the hostile area.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and spectators were awe-struck when a team of Sarang Light Utility Helicopters (LUH) saluted the leader from the sky. It was when the Arjun Mark 2 battle tank slithered through the beach sand, a sandstorm struck the spectators, figuratively.

Apart from hosting public on Saturday at the expo venue, defence ministry will also allow the public to see the Indian warships INS Sahyadri and Kamorta anchored at Chennai Harbour on Friday and Sunday.
