Hyderabad: Expressing wonder at not a single admission taking place in 398 government schools in the state, the Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the state government to explain why it was so, in four weeks.
A division bench comprising Justice Deepak Mishra and Justice Keerthi Singh was dealing with petitions seeking to direct the TS and AP governments to take steps to fill teachers’ vacancies in government schools.
Amicus curiae Ashok Gupta told the bench that TS had not made any efforts to fill up teacher vacancies. It had admitted in its affidavit that no admission had taken place in 398 schools in 2015-16
Maintaining that providing basic amenities and implementation of Right to Education Act was the responsibility of the state government, the bench asked the amicus curiae to visit TS schools along with an advocate of the Telangana Parents Federation and study the reasons for the schools not getting students and the facilities available in schools and submit a report within four weeks.
Mr Vishwanath Setty, counsel for TS, said the state was taking steps to improve the conditions in schools.
