Hyderabad: In order to rejuvenate and revitalise the water bodies in Greater Hyderabad, the Telangana High Court on Tuesday issued directions to the state police, revenue authorities and GHMC which were bestowed with enforcement of laws to take action against persons who try and pollute water bodies located in the city limits under the environment protection law and other laws which were implemented by the state and local bodies from time to time .
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Thottathil B Radhakrishnan and Justice A. Rajasekhar Reddy, was dealing with petitions by IPS officer Anjana Sinha and others who sought directions to the concerned authorities to protect the Malkam Cheruvu at Raidurg and some more water bodies which were under encroachment and polluted because of the filling of garbage. The court affirmed that stringent actions should be taken against persons who were trying to pollute the water bodies.
The bench directed the police authorities who have control over the GHMC limits including the DGP, CPs and other lower rank police officers, revenue authorities from District collectors to all cadre and GHMC authorities to take preventive actions to protect water bodies and also take stringent actions against violators according to the laws.
The court after perusing the status reports about lakes observed that there were certain activities by the people which were obstructing the efforts of the GHMC to protect water bodies and to rejuvenate them.
Meanwhile, the court complimented the efforts of GHMC on its earlier directions to make the surroundings of Malkam cheruvu as a plastic free zone and to protect FTL. The court said the efforts of GHMC seemed to be working in protecting Malkam cheruvu and the same should be followed with all other water bodies in the greater limits.
