Furnish leaders\' list for poll travel expenses exemption

The list of leaders for whom the parties desire to get exemption should be communicated to the Election Commission of India.

Chennai: The Election Commission has sought a list of leaders for whom the political parties desire to get exempted the expenditure incurred on account of travel by air or any other means of transport during the campaign for the April 18 Lok Sabha election.

"The list of leaders for whom the parties desire to get exemption should be communicated to the Election Commission of India / Chief Electoral Officer on or before March 26," Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo said on Wednesday. Apart from the travel expenses incurred by the leaders whose names have been communicated to the ECI / CEO, all other expenses of the political parties relating to the campaigns for the candidate will be required to be included in the account of election expenses of the candidates concerned. Also, travel by a star campaigner for candidates of other parties are not exempted.

In a release here he said, according to the provisions of Section 77 of the Representation of the People's Act, 1951, the expenditure incurred by leaders of political parties on account of travel by air or any other means of transport for propagating programme of the political party is not deemed to be expenditure incurred or authorised by the candidate or his agent.

The notification for the general elections to Lok Sabha and byelections to Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, 2019 will be published on March 19.
