BJP moves EC on cop’s dance video with MP minister

The model code of conduct came into effect on Sunday after announcement of the Lok Sabha poll schedule.

Bhopal: A purported video showing Jabalpur district superintendent of police Amit Singh dancing with Madhya Pradesh minister and local MLA Lakhan Ghanghoria at a wedding ceremony on Tuesday went viral in social media, provoking Opposition BJP to move Election Commission (EC) seeking the IPS officer’s transfer to “ensure transparency in the April-May Lok Sabha elections in the region”.

In the video clip, which was submitted to the EC by BJP on Tuesday, Mr Singh was seen merrily dancing with the minister at a marriage function in the city recently. Both of them were seen in the clip shaking legs holding each other’s hands amid clapping by the invitees.

While drawing the EC’s attention to the “camaraderie” of the IPS officer and the minister, BJP apprehended that it might come in way of holding free and fair elections in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Jabalpur parliamentary constituency and demanded immediate transfer of the police officer from his post.

“Local police had framed our candidate in Jabalpur East assembly constituency in false cases during the November, 2018 assembly elections. Mr Singh was chief of district police then too. In this backdrop, we are apprehensive about free and fair elections in the upcoming LS polls in Jabalpur seat”, state BJP vice-president Brijesh Lunawat who led the delegation of the party to submit a memorandum containing the demand, said.

“We have demanded that the EC immediately remove SP of Jabalpur,” Mr Lunawat added.
