Bengaluru: Public dustbins back in city, 5,000 in first phase
Bengaluru: The BBMP, which had placed dustbins in some areas on a trial basis, has received a good response. Dustbins have proven to be effective with people using them extensively and garbage dumping reducing. The Palike is now planning to place dustbins across the city to ensure that there is no littering on roads and public spaces.
A senior officer from the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Department said, "We had placed separate dustbins for wet and dry waste at a few places in K.R. Puram, Banaswadi, Shivajinagar, K.R. Market and other places on an experimental basis. It is found that people use them regularly and there is no littering in areas around bins. The bins were placed at spots where the public used to dump garbage and now it has been avoided. After checking the spots, we was found that the residents and commercial establishments have been using the bins to dump garbage. For now, we will place 5,000 bins across the city and increase them later."
Another officer said that the zonal level officers have been asked to finalise the spots where the bins have to be placed. "They have already submitted a list of spots across all the seven zones and these are the places where people used to dump garbage. Once the bins are placed at these spots, then people will gradually stop throwing garbage on the roads or footpaths and instead use the bins," he added.
"By the end of the year, we will ensure that there are bins placed strategically to reduce public garbage dumping," he said.
