Vijayawada: Cyber wing gets more employees

Office to function full-fledged in a month.

Vijayawada: The cyber crime wing of Vijayawada is being strengthened with more personnel being shifted to it. One inspector K. Srinivasa Rao has been transferred from Bhavanipuram police station to cyber crime, apart from two sub-inspectors K.V. Prasad from Thotlavalluru PS and V. Srinu from CCS. A building has been readied at the commissioner's office itself for the cyber crime wing.

Earlier, this wing used to have only one inspector and six constables. The cyber crime authorities had to request the regular staff of police stations to cooperate with them in the investigation, on the reference of Commissioner of Police, Gowtham Sawamg. Mr Sawang has been continuously trying to make cyber crime a functioning wing like that of Hyderabad. He has arranged several training sessions to the selected members of the department.

Now, the commissioner began posting selected candidates to the cyber wing. Post-demonetisation, online transactions have increased giving cyber criminals a chance to loot innocent people. The OTP (One Time Password) option is the main weapon for cyber criminals. They are trying to take advantage of Aadhaar linking, issue of new credit cards, benefits from government schemes and use it for their benefit.

The criminals call the consumer, tell all the details to get faith of the bank customer and then ask for OTP. If that happens, the money from the respective account will be withdrawn. Inspector of cyber wing Srinivas told DC "We are strengthening the wing slowly. One S-I of CCS Srinu is already working here and now, the posting has been done officially. One from Thotlavalluru PS has also been posted to our wing. Our office is going to ready within a month. Depending on the commissioner's decision, we will function full-fledged very soon."
