Kerala: No bail for first accused in forced conversion case

Meanwhile, the court granted bail to Fawas Jamal and Siyad, both native North Paravoor, arrested for aiding Muhammed Riyaz.

Kochi: A special court on Monday rejected the bail petition moved by Muhammed Riyas, main accused in the forcible conversion case while allotting the same to 7th and 10th accused in the case. The Kochi NIA Court, while turning down the bail application, observed that the victim, wife of the key accused, had leveled grave charges against him on which the investigations are yet to get over. Earlier the National Investigation Agency (NIA) informed the court that probe against the main accused is not completed and that it was planning to seek his custody again.

As per the case, the 25-year old victim, a native of Ranni in Pathanamthitta and brought up in Gujarat, met Riyas, a native of North Paravur while studying at Bangalore. The latter allegedly forced her to have sex with him and filmed it secretly. He then began to threaten her and forced to marry him. Later he took her to Saudi Arabia and allegedly attempted to take her to Syria to sell her to Islamic State terrorists as sex slave. Riyas, who was absconding for the last over a year, was finally taken into custody by an NIA team from Chennai airport on February two last while he arrived from Jeddah via Colombo.

Meanwhile, the court granted bail to Fawas Jamal and Siyad, both native North Paravoor, arrested for aiding Muhammed Riyaz. This after the NIA submitted before the court that it could not establish any link of Siyad with the IS during the probe and Fawas only aided Riyas after the marriage. While granting the bail, the court directed the accused to present a bond Rs one lakh and two solvent sureties. Both were asked not to leave the country and present before the investigation officer whenever asked to.
