IIM-Visakhapatnam aspirants cheer, 40 more seats added
Visakhapatnam: More management aspirants can now hope to get into the top business school with the Indian Institute of Management, Visakhapatnam increasing its seats from 60 to 100 for the PGP in the academic year, 2017-18. IIM-V with IIM-Bengaluru has performed well among the new six IIMs, established in 2015. Dispelling the doubts of management aspirants that new IIMs cannot ensure placements, IIM-V is drawing recruiters from various sectors and ensuring 100 per cent summer placements.
The institute is functioning from a temporary campus on the Andhra University. The Detailed Project Report for the new campus has been prepared and is awaiting the approval of the Ministry of HRD. When asked if the existing infrastructure could accommodate new students, IIM-V director Prof. M. Chandrasekhar said, “For classrooms, there is no issue at all. We are modifying the existing classrooms. And, the hostel accommodation is what we have to arrange soon. We would soon invite bids for hostel building.”
On faculty strength, he said there are 11 teachers so far, exactly complying with the required teacher and student ration of 1: 10. “We had 110 students in both the batches. As the student number will increase, new faculties would be recruited and the proposal for the same has already been sent to the higher-ups,” the director added.
Showing an impressive performance with respect to Pre-Placement Offer (PPO) right at its second batch itself, IIM-Visakhapatnam (IIM-V) has recorded 75 per cent growth, according to insiders. The institute had claimed that four students of its first batch (2015-17) had got pre-placement offers. When the career development services of IIM-V responsible for all placement and career-related activities and services as an interface between organisations and students asked the officials, they said that as per norms, IIMs make placement data public only when the final placement process finishes.
The summer placements for the 2017-19 batch was also 100 percent and the final placement details of the 2016-18 is yet to be disclosed. In its maiden academic batch, the average package of the first batch students of IIM-V was '11 lakh better than some of the new IIMs despite the grim market situation. 90 per cent of the batch (44) got placed in reputed companies. As per the placement report uploaded on their respective websites, IIM Nagpur, IIM-Amritsar have performed well. The placement data of IIM-Sambalpur, IIM Bodh Gaya and IIM-Sirmaur was not available.
