Green protocols set for Malayatoor pilgrimage

There is a ban on tins, cans, plastic bottles and all other materials which are not easily decomposable.

Kochi: Ernakulam district collector K Muhammed Y Safirulla on Monday decided to implement the green protocol in Malayatoor Kurishumudi and its premises and warned of imposing a fine of upto Rs 10, 000 on those found disposing plastic materials during the pilgrimage season. The festival associated with the St Thomas Church, Malayatoor, began on March 10 and will get over on April 10. Hundreds of pilgrims from across the state have started descending on the pilgrimage centre.

“There is a ban on tins, cans, plastic bottles and all other materials which are not easily decomposable. Sealed or unsealed containers, plastic disposables and carry bags too can’t be taken. The ban is as per the Kerala Police Act 80. The initiative was taken after it came to the notice of district authorities of the piling up of plastic and food material package wastes at the pilgrim centre. The issue also figured prominently in the February 18 meet attended by elected representative of the region,” a statement said. Meanwhile, steps have been taken to ensure provision of drinking water and food through eco-friendly modes.
