Hyderabad: Wrinkled fingers defeat Aadhaar

GHMC biometric attendance system hits block.

Hyderabad: The implementation of Aadhaar-based biometric attendance for sweepers and sanitary workers of the GHMC has run into trouble. Some workers’ fingerprints are wrinkled and don’t match the Aadhaar data base while others don’t have an Aadhaar card.

The civic body introduced the biometric attendance system in order to curb the practice of regular workers letting others do their work in return for a nominal payment, which is much less that the salary drawn by the regular worker. In other words, rending out their jobs to others and making a profit.

The biometric attendance was introduced in the city for the first time in the country and the civic body captured fingerprints and Aadhaar details of 22,000 workers. GHMC has provided the devices to sanitary field assistants in 25 circles. The entomology department was allocated 271

But, due to the lack of awareness in some workers, they are not enrolled with Aadhaar and are thus unable to prove their attendance. The majority of sanitary workers are above 40 years of age and have wrinkled fingers, which is leading to a mismatch of fingerprint data available with the Aadhaar database.

GHMC commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy informed the media that the sanitary wing will take the initiative to enrol workers who do not have the card at the nearest Aadhaar centres.

“Similarly, we are finding a few cases related to wrinkle or hard fingerprints and are introducing an iris-based attendance capturing system,” he said.

He said that the devices were handed over to all the circles, and biometric attendance was being implemented 100 per cent, except few a cases.
