Hyderabad: Hostels suck up water meant

The Water Board has identified 1,000 hostels that are using pumps to draw more water, resulting in low pressure in other areas.

Hyderabad: Those living in the Water Board’s SR Nagar division area and getting less supply should blame the numerous hostels that are stealing water.

The Water Board has identified 1,000 hostels that are using pumps to draw more water, resulting in low pressure in other areas.

Also, some 3,000 connections in Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills draw water for commercial use but pay the lower domestic charges.

The misuse of domestic connections has led to huge revenue losses to the Water Board. The tariff for a commercial tap connection is more than double that of a domestic connection.

There are 23,892 Customer Account Numbers that match with GHMC house numbers, and these connections need to be converted to commercial category from domestic.

Such misuse can be checked, said Water Board managing director M. Dana Kishore.

“Deputy general managers should download the commercial taxes data and revenue billing data and filter them division-wise for appropriate action on category conversion. The misuse of domestic water connections has been causing a huge loss. If 23,892 customers are converted to commercial category, there would be a substantial improvement in revenue collection,” he said.

Efforts should be made to identify establishments that are wrongly billed, he said.
